UNDP Iran and Koochita Launch Partnership to Support Ecotourism in Rural Areas

On August 17, 2023, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Iran and Koochita, a digital platform for sustainable travel and tourism, launched a partnership to support ecotourism and services in rural areas. The partnership was launched in the presence of Vice-President for Science and Technology, Dr. Sorena Sattari, CEO of Sisootech Accelerator Lab, Ms. Soore Vahe, and UNDP Iran Resident Representative, Mr. Claudio Providas.

The partnership aims to build resilience in rural communities by supporting the development of sustainable tourism enterprises. This will be done through a combination of activities, including:

  • Providing training and support to local entrepreneurs on how to develop and market sustainable tourism products and services.
  • Investing in digital infrastructure and marketing to help local businesses reach a wider audience.
  • Promoting ecotourism and sustainable travel in Iran through national and international campaigns.

The partnership is expected to benefit thousands of people in rural communities across Iran. It is also expected to contribute to the country’s economic development and environmental sustainability.

Soore Vahe: speeding up digital transformation, particularly for micro and small enterprises

Soore Vahed, CEO of Sisootech Accelerator Lab, spoke at the launch event about the importance of digital transformation for micro and small enterprises in rural areas. She said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us the importance of connectivity and technology. We must draw lessons and build resilience by speeding up digital transformation, particularly for micro and small enterprises.”

Claudio Providas: Ecotourism is a key driver of sustainable development in rural areas

Mr. Claudio Providas, UNDP Iran Resident Representative, also spoke at the event. He highlighted the importance of ecotourism for sustainable development. He said, “Ecotourism is a form of tourism that promotes responsible travel to natural areas, conserving the environment and sustaining the well-being of local people. It is a key driver of sustainable development in rural areas.”

The partnership between UNDP Iran and Koochita is a welcome step towards supporting ecotourism and services in rural areas. By helping local businesses to develop and market sustainable tourism products and services, the partnership will contribute to the economic development and environmental sustainability of these communities.
